YOUTH AND SPORTS

Approval for additional work items considered for the renovation of Durbar Stadium, Oyo, worth N3.6million.

A sum of N2.58million was paid to two [2] out of the three Contractors that handled the               construction of the Perimeter Block Wall Fence of Saki Township Stadium, Saki.        However, the retention fees of N399,823.60 had been approved for release to the Contractors in accordance with the operating Contract Agreement.

A contract for the renovation of Soun Stadium Ogbomoso, which covers re-roofing of the spectators' grandstand, grassing of the field, provision of bore-hole water supply and completion of toilets [10 no.] and 4 no gate houses was awarded to Contractor in December, 2007.  The contract sum is N32million and the Contractor had been mobilized. 

A sum of N53million was approved and released for the construction of the Sports Centre and Parade Ground at the NYSC permanent oriental camp.

The construction of 2 Hostels and 1 NYSC Camp Commandant/Director's Quarters was awarded in December, 2008.  The contract sum is N66,777,053.54 and N8,432,405.35 respectively and the contractors had been mobilized.  Construction has commenced.

A contract for the construction of Swimming Pool was awarded in November, 2008 at a sum of N113,841,560.88 and the Contractor had been mobilized.  Construction has reached 21.5% work done.

The sum of N10million was released in January, 2009 for the renovation of Squash Hall at Lekan Salami Sports Complex.  The project is on-going.

The phase 1 renovation of the Executive Gymnasium was awarded in November, 2008 at the contract sum of N2,898,894.90.  The contractor had been mobilized.

The sum of N460,000.00 was released for the purchase of Table Tennis Boards with accessories and the rewiring of the Gymnasium centre.  Furthermore, N50,000.00 was approved for the purchase of First-Aid Box and drugs to the centre in 2008. 

The sum of N3,852,000.00 was approved and released in 2009 to procure and distribute sports equipment to 33 Secondary Schools in the State. The Equipment [Set of Table Tennis, nets and ball] had already been procured.

Furthermore, N224,000.00 was approved and released for the commissioning of the Sports Equipment.

The sum of N5,794,054.80 was released in January, 2009 to renovate the Ministry's office building and this has been completed.

The sums of N8.9million and N14 million were approved as grants and donations and released in year 2007 to 28 clubs and 2008 to 35 clubs respectively to encourage professionalism and establishment of vibrant clubs.

The sum of N256,000.00 was released in year 2008 to enable the State participate in Odu'a Cup Competition.  The Sunshine Football Club, Akure, Ondo State won the trophy.

The sum of N826,000.00 was released to organize competition among Able and Physically Challenged in the State in year 2008.

The sum of N4.5million was released to participate in the Annual Public Service Games in year 2008 held at Niger State. Oyo State participated fully and came 2nd in the Federation.

The sums of N2,895,200.00 and N2,901,300.00 were released in year 2007 and 2008 to organize a successful Governors Cup Competition among Secondary Schools in the State.  The 2007 winner was Asegun group of Schools, Ibadan while Success High School, Abanla won the competition in 2008.

The State Government has released the sum of N177,556,367.25 till date for successful participation of Shooting Stars Sports Club in the Professional League season.

The sum of N100,000,000.00 was released to Crown Football Club, Ogbomoso, for successful participation in the Professional League season in 2008.

As a result of the fund released by the State Government, the construction and expansion of players' camp has commenced and work has reached a reasonable stage.

To ease transportation of players and officials for away matches, the management purchased a space bus for official use and two [2] other buses were refurbished.

In order to facilitate the outstanding performance of the State at Zonal, National and International sporting competitions, this administration generously approved the appointment of 120 Athletes and 40 Coaches on Contract basis.

The State Government released the sums of N4,241,800.00 in 2007, N14,747,630.00 in 2008 and N4,844,400.00 in 2009 to support various programmes of NYSC in the State .

In anticipation of the propagation of the National Youth Policy Booklet and its implementation, the sum of N220,000.00 was approved and released for the production.

The State Government released the sums of N1,800,000.00 in 2007 and N1,885,000.00 in 2008 as grants to Voluntary Youth Organizations in the State.

In 2007, 60 voluntary Youth Organisation members and Youth Leaders were trained as peer educators to reduce truancy and other anti-social behaviours among the youths.  Four thousand copies of Information, Education and Communication [IEC] materials were printed and distributed freely to youths in the State.

In 2008, Jingles were produced and relayed on Radio and Television in the State to sensitize the youths on the dangers inherent in anti social behaviours as well as send messages to parents on their responsibilities towards their children and wards.

Seventy seven [77] unemployed youths drawn from the 33 Local Governments in the State were trained in various vocational skills i.e. soap making, fashion designing, catering, tie and dye etc. and most of the beneficiaries are now self reliant and gainfully employed.

N180,000.00 was released to Publish 4,000 copies of Young Nigeria Magazine to enable the youths air their views on issue agitating their minds, while Government gets feedback on its programmes and projects. 

99 School Prefects were trained in 2007 and 2008 yearly with a view to imbibing in them qualities expected of leaders at their level and promote cooperation, peace and harmony with the school authority.

In 2008, 100 selected apprentices in various vocations such as barbing, shoe making, motor mechanic and fashion designing were imbibed with skills to enable them run their businesses successfully and be positive contributors to their communities.

42 youths were given awards in recognition and honour of those who have excelled in their various fields of human endeavour.

The first phase of renovation works on the IYY Youth Village, Ajoda, which is the only suitable camping venue for youths in the State awarded to Contractors in the sum of N13,516,746.33 is almost completed.  The State Government has recently approved the release of the balance payment in the sum of N9,011,164.12  for the completion of the project.

The State Government in April, 2008 approved the renovation of the three buildings at the Ososami Youth Centre; Ibadan i.e. Main Hall, Boxing Hall and Hobby Craft Building in the sum of N3,182,105.65.  The project had been completed.

Sixty out of sixty-one members of Staff of the Ministry of Youth and Sports attended training programme within and outside the State.

The government had paid N39,979,505.62 as salaries, leave allowances and running cost for the period under review.

The total sum of N949,000.00 had been expended on the purchase of office equipment.

The State Government had expended N1,051,450.00 on Staff training and development.

 

16th National Sports Festival “KADA 2009”

The Oyo State contingent in the 16th National Sports Festival held in Kaduna tagged “KADA 2009” between 13th and 26th February, 2009 placed 6th position overall by winning 26 Gold, 27 Silver and 49 Bronze Medals.  At the end of the festival, the State returned with an unprecedented winning of Ninety-nine medals.

 

RECORDS SET

The first Gold medal won at the 16th National Sports festival was by Oyo State Athlete  Miss Victoria Gabriel in Cycling (Sprint) event.

Mr. Yakubu Adesokan from Oyo State broke the World record in powerlifting.  He lifted 170kg weight as against 169kg former World record.  This made Oyo State to tower over all other States in the country in terms of world record performance.

Since the inception of the National Sports Festival (NSF) in 1973, this is the first time Oyo State will win the highest Gold Medals (26) as well as the highest total number of medals (99).

 

AWARDS

Notably, the Executive Governor, His Excellency, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala created an enabling environment for the athletes as they were well motivated with cash awards to all the medalists in the Gold, Silver and Bronze categories at N300,000.00, N200,000.00 and N100,000.00 respectively.

In the same vein, an “on-the-spot” Cash Award of N10,000.00 for Gold, N5,000.00 for Silver and N2,000.00 for Bronze medals won by the Athletes was presented to the recipients immediately after winning their sports.

 

Amateur Football Activities

Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria Tournament (YSFON)

The Oyo State Non Division Amateur U-14 Football Club represented the State at the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria Tournament held in Minna, Niger State.  The Male Team came first while the Female Team came second.  The Female Team has also qualified for the Professional League.

 

State Football Clubs

Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) and Crown Football Club, Ogbomoso

The State Government has continuously released promptly the running costs of these Football Clubs which has alleviated problems of funding. This has gone a long way in enhancing the successful participation of the teams in the Nigeria Nation Leagues.

 

Sports Facilities

Distribution of Sports Equipment to 33 Secondary Schools in the State

To promote the game of tennis among the Secondary Schools in the State, the sum of N6 million was expended on the procurement of Table Tennis and its Accessories and distributed to 33 Secondary Schools in the State.

 

Construction of Swimming Pool at Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan

In an attempt to complete the complimenting Sports Facilities in Lekan Salami Sports Complex the sum of N113 Million is being spent on the execution of the on-going project-construction of an Olympic Standard Swimming Pool.

 

Sport Administration

In order to facilitate the outstanding performance of the State at Zonal, National and International Sporting competitions, this administration appointed 120 athletes and 40 coaches on contract basis.
