IREPO LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Irepo Local Government Area is one of the oldest in Oyo State. It came into existence in 1954 when it was known as Kishi District. In 1976, the name was changed to Irepo Local Government. Oorelope and Olorunsogo Local Government Area were later carved out of Irepo Local Government Area.
With its administrative headquarters located at Kishi, the Local Government area has a land area of 972.316 square kilometers. The 2010 estimated population for Irepo Local Government Area was projected to be 139,012 based on a growth rate of 3.2% using 2006 census figures. It has a population density of 143 persons per square kilometers. The Local Government area shares boundaries with Kware State in the north, Oorelope and Olorunsogo Local Government Areas in he south.
The people of the Local Government Area are mostly farmers, traders and transporters. The residents are Yoruba and other tribes from various parts of the country. Soil fertility in the area enhances the production of yam, maize, melon, guinea corn and soya beans in large quantities. However, the Local Government Area is popularly referred to as the food basket of Oyo State.
Kishi is well endowed with tourists’ attraction centres like Adesobo Hill, Dunmoni Hill and the National Games Reserve.
