Lagelu Local Government area was created in 1976 with its administrative headquaters located at Iyana Offa.

The Local Government area has a land are of 310.850 square kilometers. Based on a growth rate of 3.2% from 2006 census, the 2010 estimated population of the Local Government area was projected to be 167,828 with a population density of 540 persons per square kilometer. It shares boundaries with Egbeda Local Government to the East and Iwo Local Government to the West, Ibadan North Local Government to the North and Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan North East Local Government to the South. The Local Government area comprises of the following: Iyana-Offa, Iwo Road, Monatan, Lalupon, Ejioku, Lagun, Apatere, Oyedeji, Igbo Elerin and other settlements. The Yorubas and other tribes from different parts of the country dominate the local government area.

The rural areas of the Local Government are dominated by farmers who practice arable farming (cassava, maize, yam) and livestock farming. Among the cash crops cultivated in the area are oil palm, cocoa and kolanut. Parts of the Local Government Area, which share boundaries with Ibadan North East Local Government area assume urban status. The people in this area engage in various economic activities. Few industries are located in the area.
