OYO WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Oyo West Local Government area carved out of Oyo Local Government in December 5th 1996 with the administrative headquarters locatedat Ojongbodu. It shares boundaries with Atiba Local Government Area to the North, Afijio and Akinyele Local Government Area to the South, a big river to the West and Oyo East Local Government area to the East. It occupies a land area of 519.377 square kilometers with a population density of 298 persons per square kilometer. Using a growth rate of 3.2% from 2006 census, the Local Government population was projected to be 154,532 for 2010. Dominated by the Yorubas and other resident tribes, the people are of different religious backgrounds of Christianity, Islamic and Traditional religion.

The Local Government Area is endowed with wide expanse of land suitable for agricultural activities. The people are predominantly farmers who specialize in the cultivation of cocoa, cashew, coffee, cononut and rubber. Teak and Melina re the major forest products, while piggery cattle, sheep and goats rearing also form part of livestock activities.
