Oyo State Governor , Senator Abiola Ajimobi has urged Nigerians to re – dedicate themselves to Agro – business and cue into agricultural programmes designed by both Federal and State Governments to enhance socio-economic development of the country.
He stated this at a Town Hall Meeting with farmers youths, women, and other stakeholders in agricultural sector held at House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan.
Governor Ajimobi, who described agriculture as major sector worthy of providing jobs and wealth for numerous people said there is need for individuals to pay attention to agricultural practices and sought for knowledge needed to survive in the business.
He appealed to citizens of the state to take advantage of ongoing agricultural reform programmes in the country and be diligent in their daily activities.
The Governor, thereafter expressed readiness of his administration to partner with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in making agriculture a profitable business.
In his address, the Hon. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh said the purpose of the Town Hall Meeting was to interact with agricultural stakeholders , identify challenges confronting farmers and find ways of finding lasting solutions for the development of Agro business in the country.
Ogbeh, who frowned at the altitude of individuals to agricultural practices emphasized the need for the country to increase on production of farm produce rather than depending on foreign goods at all times.
He hinted that free range cattle rearing in the country will soon become a thing of the past, noting that his administration is committed in resuscitating under utilized dams nationwide and overall development of agricultural practices.
The Minister, however, applauded Governor Ajimobi for creating an enabling environment for the development of Agro – business, promising to facilitate the establishment of cashew factory in the state with a view to complimenting the effort of Oyo State Government in its quest to promote agriculture.
In his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, Prince Oyewole Oyewumi revealed that Two Thousand, Four Hundred Youths in twenty – Eight Agrarian Local Government areas of the State have successfully participated in Oyo State Agriculture Initiative programme tagged AGRIK OYO.
He enjoined the farmers and stakeholders in the state to participate in the ongoing farmers’ data capturing programme to achieve the success of the programme .
