International Women’s Day: Oyo Extols Women, Condemns Gender Violence

In commemoration of the 2021 International Women’s Day, Oyo State Government has extolled the woman for their positive roles in the socio-economic development of the State.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Alhaja Faosat Sanni, stated this during a media parley the occasion of the International Women’s Day, in her office on Monday where she appreciated the women for their vital roles as mothers and equal partners in the development of the home and society at large.

While responding on the theme for the year, ‘Choose to Challenge’, she urged individuals, organizations and corporate bodies to rise against gender inequality and celebrate the achievement of women all over the world.

“We should not be discriminated against by whatever form or colour, but be seen and treated as equal partners, education should be for both male and female children and equal opportunity in employment and other areas of existence,” she said.

The Commissioner assured the women of Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to reducing violence against women in public and private life by discouraging harmful traditional practice such as female genital mutilation, increase in women involvement in politics and decision making and by enacting violence against person’s law.

Sanni reiterated the Governor’s commitment to uphold women’s achievement and to recognize their challenges through adequate attention while she encouraged them to be more focused and emulate good mentors.

Oyo State Government has recently passed the bill against violence against women and children in the State, which criminalized actions like rape, gender bias, attack and untoward acts against the women in the State.
