Oyo To Review Building Laws To Ensure Quality Structures

As part of its urban renewal drive, Oyo State Government has announced its readiness to review the building laws in the State, in order to align with the international best standard and modern aesthetics.

This was disclosed on Thursday by the Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Prof. Kehinde Sangodoyin, when he received a delegation from the State branch of the Nigerian Institute of Buildings, (NIOB) as the body celebrated the 2021 builder’s day.

The Commissioner stressed that although Oyo State does not experience building collapse like some other States, it was necessary to re-examine the laws that bother on building to make the outlook appealing and solid to stand the test of time.

Prof. Sangodoyin called on all professionals in the building industry to work as a team to achieve the desired result in the building industry.

He enjoined members of the institute to guide the noble profession aloft a greater height, adding that the relevance of NIOB was thinning out as a result of the works of other sister professions like architecture and civil engineers.

Sangodoyin assured the institute of the State Government’s intention to leverage on the partnership between her and the body to bring about better infrastructures in the State.

“This relationship we are forging will have better effect on social infrastructures in our State, it will give the people quality for their money when they put up structures, while public infrastructures will be better for it.

“I will want to assure you of the support of the Government of Oyo State in order to achieve this lofty goal and we call on your members to see core professionalism and discipline as important, so as to take your society to the height it deserves.”

The team leader who is the Chairman of the institute, Dr Akeem Wahab, said the institute was set out to ensure that buildings are solid in their construction and are done by professionals, as many quacks and unqualified individuals now take up the duties of professionals in the society.

He appealed to the State Government to engage their members in the State infrastructural development plan as they are willing to join in national building.
